Heal the World: Tribute to Michael Jackson

Chennai was eager to witness the artists unite at Wesley Grounds Royapettah.  The program started by 8pm with the introduction from Blaaze and Pravin Mani, the producer of this music event.  This programme has been conducted to make the world aware of Autism, by the Autism society of India.  Every 1 child out of 150 is suffering from Autism.

    The show started with Benny Dayal singing Jam song and It was around 39 songs.  Highlight of the event was Benny Dayal and Sunitha Sarathy.  They made the show a lively one.

Timmy rocked suddenly with two songs.  That was awesome and attracted many.  Naresh Iyer and Haricharan tried well with 4 numbers. 

Suchitra started well with Beat it song, but it doesn’t suit to her voice. 

Viewers support was more as expected.  Less number of audiences was there.  But diehard fans of MJ started to dance to the tunes of Benny, Sunitha, Suvi Suresh, Milli. 

Shankar Mahadevan, Eshaan, Loy were present for a song along with Shankar mahadevan’s son Siddharth.  It was Siddharth’s first performance to the world.

Costumes were awesome which was done by Priya Ramesh and it was portraying the styles of MJ. 

John Britto’s team tried well for few songs and that was good.

The show ended with all the artists singing the anthem song and it made everyone to stand up and join to the tunes.

Suresh Peters, Kavitha, Roshini, Sanjeev, Anu, did a good show.  Augustin’s choir supported well to the show and it was mind-blowing.

Simbu, Gautam Menon was present in the show.

P.S.I Love you - Book review by Jaya Gowri

P.S.I Love you is a book about young widow Holly who finds herself so incompetent to go on in her life without her sweetheart Jerry.As Jerry had already knew this, he had framed a list of things that Holly has to do after he passed by ,which she receives as a parcel after his death .The list had wishes that would transform Holly and make her realize life has to go on and should be celebrated and also gave her the hope that she is always being watched by an Angel above that is Jerry .
Perhaps the author has sketched in such a way that you could not just sympahize but also empathize with Holly.All characters have been given equal importance .You would remember all the characters, may be not by their names because it is quite hard to remember their names as it is not easy as Sita and Rama.
Don't read this book when you are having people around you because they may wonder if you have gone mad ,they'd never know that this book can make even a hard hearted person shed tears and also make you giggle as it is a blend of romnace and comedy
This book infact persuades everyone to keep their loved ones happy and care for them even after their death.It is a must read P.S.Fall in love

Whats your Rashee, Music review by Phalgunn Maharishi

Believe it or not, the album has a total 13 tracks, each representing a zodiac sign and the last one summing up all of them.The music of What’s Yours Rashee oozes with freshness and breaks all preconceived notions about Bollywood music.

There’s a very soothing start to the album with Pal Pal Dil Jisko Dhoonde (Sohail Sen). There is generous use of the saxophone in the music, which makes it even smoother. The track will be loved by all..!

Listen to Jao Na (Sohail Sen, Tarannum Malik) and you will notice the melody is just created out of pure guitar and bass…now that’s seldom attempted! It takes you back to the good old days when Rahul Roy strung up the guitar for his only remembered movie.

Up next is Aaja lehrate that has vocals by Shaan and Bhavya Pandit. It is quite fast-paced and has western influences with English lyrics thrown in here and there. But the peppy number doesn't stand out in the album.

Bikhri bikhri, sung by Sohail Sen and Marianne D. Cruz, will have a tranquilizing effect on you. A soft, soothing and melodious number, it immediately strikes a chord with the listener.

Then we have Mannunga mannunga. Director Ashutosh Gowariker himself goes behind the mike along with Pamela Jain to sing the song. But the track is unappealing and unexciting.

Sau janam, a love ballet by Udit Narayan, Madhushree and Sen, is one of the best songs in the album. A mushy number, it has a strong musical backing and stays with you long after. A great composition.

Next in line is Aa le chal. Sung by Aslesha Gowariker, it is nothing extraordinary. An average number.

Pyaari pyaari is another feel-good song with some amount of sweetness in it. It is crooned by Alka Yagnik and Sen.

For some Gujju flavor blended with some Arabic beats (weird right?!), Su Chhe (Alka Yagnik, Bela Shende) actually works!

Eventually leaves you feeling like fusion is not such a far-fetched dream for Indian musicians after all! The Arabic flavor continues with Salone Kya (Sohail Sen, Tarannum Malik) and feels like a slower version of Mayya Mayya from Guru..!

Dhadkan dhadkan has edgy music with a strong musical backing. Once again Sen and Tarannum team up for the song that has a haunting feel to it. The number does impress.

The best track of the album is saved for the last. Koi Jaane Na(Rajab Ali Bharti, Bela Shende) has a lot of classical arrangement in the composition, but what elevates the song are the high pitched vocals by Rajab Ali. Truly amazing..!

Finally, there is Chehra jo dekhe hain by Sen again that is the title track of the film. The song includes samples from the other 12 songs.

On the whole What's your Raashee? is a decent album, even though long. The budding composer has done a good job.

Ghajini: Music Review (by Al rufian)

As expected Ghajini’s music is good. It is similar to A.R Rahman’s recent compositions like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Yuvvraaj and Ada. The lyrics were penned down by Prasoon Joshi, an obvious influence of Gulzar sahab’s imagery and lyrical style is seen. After the greatest hit of Rang de Basanti Rahman-Prasoon team strikes again.

Guzarish is an extremely romantic number. Javed Ali as a vocalist offers a new fresh feel to the song. While we have Sonu Nigam humming in the background. Its Rahman who always like to use Sonu in his songs. In this particular song Sonu hummed in second stanza and taking us to a world of love and love only. Javed ali founded in Jodha akber again proved he can sing the melody with its original feel. His accent is amazing and the way he expressing music is simply awesome. Rahman knows Javed’s potency and gave him right song. Like jashn e bara, and kabhi kabhi guzarish will surely be a mesmerizing song which will remember for long years.

Aye Bachchoo sounds better since we dint have such a song from Rahman for long time. It is a really fun number and Suzanne sings this song with a lot of energy and attitude. She enunciates each word clearly. Rahman uses the guitars generously in this number, making you want to break out dancing immediately. While some people might automatically classify the lyrics to this song as being mediocre as it involves Hinglish, I think Prasoon Joshi does a nice job of playfully getting the message across that one should live life to the fullest: “ab khul ke jeele tu, koi seema naa border…gungunaalo, muskuraalo, zindagi toh sikhaati hai yehi…lehraalo, balkhaalo, hum qaidi toh nahin.” The word “qaidi” really stands out and is innovative in the context it is used. Its again Rahman who stand and deliver.

Kaise Mujhe a rythmic number with soul-touching lyrics with Benny Dayal and Shreya Goshal singing the great composition to perfection. This is one song you would feel like dedicating your soul-mate. he magical combination of Benny Dayal and Shreya Ghoshal, who were also heard in Tu hi to meri dost hai from Yuvvraaj, is back again with Kaise Mujhe. This soft number is very sweet and the disbelief the male protagonist feels, “Kaisey mujhe tum mil gayeen? Qismat pea aye naa yaqeen. Utar aayee jheel mein, jaise chaand utartaa hai kabhi” is quite touching. The use of the sitar is beautiful. Shreya Ghoshal’s alaaps have a calming affect. Clinton Cerego, Neuman Pinto (Phas Gayaa from Aamir), Vivienne Pocha do a decent job of offering backing vocals. Once again, Prasoon Joshi does a superb job with the lyrics. We heard the word “gungunaati” used in Tu Muskuraa (”raat mei chaandini kabhi aise gungunaati hai”), however the phrase “gungunaati dhoop” is very thoughtful, followed by the question, “dekhoon tumhey yaa main sunoo?” Another meaningful line from the song worth special mention is, “badalengi rituen ada, par main rahoongi sada usi tarah teri baahon mein baahen daalke har lamha, har pal.”  Benny dayal is the most lukiest chap of Rahman nowdays. As a friend of mine I know how hardly he worked to get this position. He deserved…

Behka which is more appealing visually with Aamir Khan in six different avataar. Behka is an interesting composition meshing various styles…hip-hop, jazz, blues, rock. The use of the saxophone, trumpet, drums sort of reminds me of Jaan Meri from Takshak, although the overall feel to this composition isn’t as energetic and lively as Jaan Meri. Karthik does a fantastic job getting through all the twists and turns in this song. While the lyrics to this song aren’t earth-shattering, the use of the words “rounak udaaye” in “guzare jahan sey woh rounak udaaye” is unusual (in a good way). Personally its my favorite song and Aamir too loves it lot. The lyrics are simple and yet stronger. Rahman commented it’s the best lyrics to compose song for such a situation. It’s a cool type of song and probably will be a chartbuster soon.

Latoo brings forth Shreya Goshal’s versatility as a singer who sing all kinds of songs with great ease and perfection. This song has a gentle mix of hip hop and soft music. Its a foot tapping and a jazzy track. After hearing Shreya Ghoshal croon the very romantic Kaise Mujhe, we get to hear her sing the very light-hearted number, Latoo. The song opens with the sounds of radio signals and English lyrics are thrown in. Then we suddenly hear a Spanish guitar. This fast-paced number is so catchy and playful you can’t resist but singing along and dancing carefree. The way Shreya stretches the word “yaar” is awesome!. Karthik, Tipu, Bennu, Tanvi, Sakthi Sree Gopal (who is the winner of SS MUSIC VOICE HUNT 2008), Anisha and Suvi do a nice job of providing additional and backing vocals, but it is Shreya who steals the show with her flawless rendition. While talking to my friend Shakthi, she told it was Pravin mani who programmed the song and he used all the backing vocals perfectly (I was also with her in voice hunt finals). The line, “uske aane sey bas jaaye soone soone mann kaa ilakaa” is innovative. The repetition of the word “yaar” is contagious and makes you want to sing along.

 The instrumental version of  Kaise Mujhe stands for the use of the flute and guitars is soothing and Shreya’s delicate alaaps stand out. It is really relaxing and I guess Rahman will use it for the re-recording.

On the whole Ghajini’s music album offers you refreshing and entertaining film music that will grow on you eventually as you keep hearing it.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya (VTV) Music Review by Al-rufian

To tell about the music of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa , it’s simply like a return of AR Rahman to home pitch after the great Oscars and Golden Globe. After the Slumdog fever it is something fresh from the Mozart of Madras. The songs telling the story and we can guess it has some elements like it’s about christian love story with a kerala flavor. Rahman succeeded in delivering the exact feel in the songs. This combo is great and hats off to the entire team.
I'm reviewing the songs on the basis of top to bottom. It’s like rating it top seven songs. So let’s go....

VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAAAYA (Karthick) (Additional vocals-Vivek Agarwal)
                 It’s a title track which sounds very different. Karthick gives cent percent feel to the song. It’s soulful with cute lines and it’s like the singer talking to you from heart. Oone uyire unakkaga thudithen....is simple, yet cute lines. Harmony done by Vivek is commandable. This track has a lot of giutar again telling Gowtham menon is still loving guitar to be used in his films. Slow song of the album. Lots of change overs in the music which shows the brilliance of the master. Great composition.
 
KANNUKKUL KANNAI (Naresh Iyer)                                    A song simply telling about the girl by the hero. Naresh Iyer sounds good in such numbers. This is very much apt for a Gowtham movie. Sounds like a dance number. A catchy duet I guess. The tune is peppy and foot tapping. Sure that one will move their heads while listening to this. Again simple lines from Thamarai. I guess it is her strength. Anyhow it’s noticeable the use of chorus and violin in this track. Rahman doing very good in love subjects I guess..!! Ready to dance.
 ANBIL AVAN (Devan Ekambaram, Chinmayee)                             Remember the young chap introduced by Rahman in Oh...Maria song from KAATHALAR THINAM..???? Devan Ekambaram afterOh...Mariya & Smaiyi yayi (KANDUKONDEIN KANDUKONDEIN) sung beautifully in this song along with Rahman's one of the lucky singers Chinmayee. This song again telling about the love and sounds like a duet. Yet another fast song of the album. Come on....it’s again Rahman winning everyone by using the Christian tone mixed with a traditional Tamil nadu wedding music. Don't miss the interlude after pallavi of the song. It sounds like a wedding song. Using of different sounds make the listener to love the song. It’s fresh though sounds like Boom Boom song from BOYS because of the usage of those traditional tones. A song ready for the music channels...!!
 MANNIPPAAYA (AR Rahman, Shreya Ghosal)                       A song sounds with great poetry..!! Hats off to Thamarai for the lines.
Oru naal sirithen, maru naal veruthen, unai naan kollaamal kondru puthaithen, Mannippaaya??Oh...God, it’s mesmerizing when Rahman's voice enters the song and he did justice to the song.
It delivers the exact feel about the love and also how much the pair missing each other, also like an apology. Rahman's singing is like talking to our soul. Sounds better than a lot of such situation songs of late Gowtham movies. Surprisingly used three Thirukkurals in second half of the song about love and it too in chorus with a flute behind is amazing. A lengthy song still not boring. Sure this will impress lot after the film released. Challenge for Gowtham to make it video beautiful. Visual treat waiting..!!!
 OMANA PENNE (beloved girl in malayalam) (Benny Dayal, Kalyani Menon)                                       Here it is the third best song of the album. A sure chartbuster of this year. Though it starts like Cindrella song from KANGALAL KAITHU SEI, Rahman's Excellency is clearly shown in every bit of this song. It clearly shows a malayalam touch and Benny being a malayalee, is correct choice for the song. He shows versatility from his early songs. Bass guitarist Keith Peters is surely had to be noticed in this song. Second half of the song sounds different from first which is superb.
The usage of Tavil and Nadaswaram (tamil traditional instruments) with malayalam lyrics makes us to feel it’s like a bridge between Kerala and Tamilnadu cultures. Sure that this song is gonna rule the chart this year. The malayalam lyrics penned by the female singer herself also is quite good. Again a treat to the lovers of melody..!! 
 HOSANNA (An Expression of Praise!!) (Vijayprakash, Suzanne, Blaaze)Here it is another peppy, rappy, funny, yet romantic melody. The different composition from the master. After the Fiqrana from BLUE, Vijayprakash having nice time with Rahman's studio. The entry of Blaaze with his trademark rap phrases taking the song to next level. It’s true that the rap portion reminding Apache Indian style. The listeners can surely dance to this. Suzanne had done a decent job with the humming portions. The whole song having different phrases with same tune. Surely the listener will try to hum the song. Flute sounds in middle showing the Excellency of Navin. A romantic duet. Rahman worked lot to match Gowtham's previous works. Hosanna already ruling the charts..!!
 AAROMALE (Beloved in malayalam) (Alphonse)And here the best one of the album. When Rahman have Benny to do Omane Penne, he brought one budding music director of malayalam film industry named Alphonse to bring out this year's great song. Whole music lovers received this song whole heartedly. When normal malayalam songs sounds normal, Rahman composed a full length malayalam song in a tamil movie which sounds like an english pop genre. Great feel rendered by Alphonse to this song. Guitar and Alphonse rocked the track. The chorus Swasthi swasthi..sounds very different. The song has a pain of love and it cent percent clearly taken the heart of the listener. Hats off to Kaithapram who is a great lyricist in malayalam film industry who penned the lyrics for Aaromale. Full marks to everyone in this song. And it’s Alphonse the greatest discovery of Rahman in nearly times. Sure that everyone will go for a second listen this song. Don't hear it, just feel it...!! 

                   Overall, it’s worth listening to VTV. Gowtham menon – AR Rahman combo has been worked out very well. It means a good director can get good songs from a good music director. It’s all the story whhich require songs. Rahman after long journey presented yet another romantic hit album to the lovers of music. The master is still a challenge to everyone..!! Being myself as a music director, it made me to think lot to produce good music. He made a lot of responsibility...
He once again proved he is The Master.Just feel the music.
